And this time it's different because we're in Krakow again, and we're kind of back-to-back with EuroPython, so we have joined Sprint. So EuroPython ends, EuroSciPy starts, and we overlap two days of Sprint. So if you want to go there, you can have two weeks in the beautiful city of Krakow and we have two days of talks two days of tutorials so tutorials are very strong at Europython and we also have posters so the call for talks is closed but you still have the chance to get in a poster I guess so if you want to come when you want a presentation you can do a poster presentation otherwise the main thing is you can meet a lot of core maintainers of NumPy, Pandas, MetaTip and other values scientific packages and if you want You can sprint to them and talk to them. I wanted to talk a little bit about a open source, small open source project I've done recently and it's all about strings where we can count on and why would you like that so it's actually strings that also works as integers and you might think that's completely crazy but it's specifically useful for a type of puzzles that i use to to solve from new scientists and the Sunday Times, and that's quite often with letters that have to be replaced with digits, so like some cents plus more is money, and then you have to find the different values. Those puzzles are actually usually made to be solved by humans just with some reasoning, but there's a special interest group who does that always with code, and they're two ways to do it. The ones who want to do it as fast as possible, so minimize the runtime and I'm actually the one who wants to do it with the least code. And for that it's very useful to have a package where you can actually have strings that that works like if they are numbers. And it's also a lot of fun to make it holes and it may not be as spectacular as the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus but but still it's fun so how does it work well you can just define a string like you could also define another string so for instance you can say I string 12 you can also say string 12 but that's the same you can also do that with a string and then actually those those those variables a and B are actually strings and numbers so you can for instance do a plus a and the plus operator works as a as a number so oops and the slideshow is the rebellion starting no no that's not for a couple more years it's all good And something about critical Columbus, oops, what's all that? So it's actually just then the plus operator. So you can also do calculations, times, et cetera, and you can compare it with the number 12, but also the string 12, and both are true, which is quite special, of course. But if you want to concatenate two strings, which you usually do with a plus sign, that's not possible because that's the arithmetic plus operator. So in that case you have to use the pipe operator. They just behave like strings, but as well as integers. You can do comparisons based on those strings, so then the two, the string two is then actually smaller than 100, which is not the case with the string. That can also make string sorting quite a bit easier. We can convert those to convert intervals to strings, et cetera. And for those packages, they usually, those type of puzzles also have things like have to be a prime or a triangular number or a cube or those type of things. So I've been going to these PyData events and PyCon conferences since 2001, since the first one in Berlin. And I used to hate small talk at these events. And I always see these great talks about the hardware trackers, wondering what are these people doing? I don't know. recently I became a coach for a woman who wanted to drive in tech and basically now I get paid to sit in calls with mostly strangers and facilitate conversations that go deep quickly while still being light and fun. And I found these skills actually translate into small talk and that was a really cool realization for me. And then I also realized small talk is a lot more fun if everybody is having fun not just me. And so that's why I wanted to share these some tips about how we can all have more fun at this conference and any future conference you attend by having small talk. So one way to have more fun is to treat small talk like collaborative detective game. The goal is to discover topics together that you are all excited about. So whether you're talking one on one or in a small group, the goal is really how can we find that topic in conversation that we are really excited to talk about it and just talk about it. So that small talk is really the preamble to find that topic that we really want to talk about, all of us. And what I realized over the time is why is small talk usually boring and painful? It's basically because our nervous system is afraid of strangers, especially in groups. And then we shut down, and then we don't dare to talk about anything except for safe and basic and boring facts, like where do we work, and how was the trip to Darmstadt? And that's not really engaging, and it's not that entertaining. And eventually you get stuck there, and it's sad. so what I found and what I also learned in my coaching training is before we can open up and have really entertaining and inspiring conversation we need to establish trust and psychological safety and that goes for small talk as much as for coaching conversation therapists train this for years so don't feel bad if you don't immediately get it right but it's a good thing to practice and then it's quite empowering to learn and there are a few things that help with that First of all, some non-verbal basics, gentle eye contact, maybe smile, keeping a conversational distance, so being somewhere where people notice you and can hear you, but not too close and not too far. And that's a cultural thing, and it's a bit tricky sometimes to get right in intercultural contexts. Then good warm-up topics are things, common experiences. So if I talk about my job and you talk about your job, that's usually not a common experience. But as boring as it sounds, the weather or the food in the venue or the last talk you attended together can be, as long as everybody can really talk about the topic and have something to contribute, it's a good warm-up topic. But it's not so much about what you talk about, it's more about how you talk about it. And so try to understand what the others value about this topic, exchange your thoughts, opinions, feelings. So even though the topic might be really boring, it's a practice for exchanging basically the safety, that you're establishing the context and the game of, oh yeah, we can talk with each other. And then our nervous system relaxes, and then we can open up and go into more interesting topics. And the key here really is to appreciate each other rather than debate or argue. So it's very common, and it used to be a cliche with the tech flame war. So it's very easy to get into, oh, yeah, but I see you differently and you're wrong. That's not helpful in small talk. That's really the one thing to really pay attention to. It's really about, oh, what are you saying, and how can I add to this without contradicting you? And so once the conversation is flowing, it is safe to branch into more personal topics that might be more meaningful and more exciting. And then there's a small, that is kind of the game part. How do we jump from one topic to the next one and find out what is interesting to you? And you will feel immediately when you find a topic that's interesting to all of you, because then the conversation just takes off. And sometimes you don't find what you're looking for, and then maybe after 10 minutes realize, okay, find some different people to play with, briefly to excuse yourself politely, and just head off. There's no need to keep each other locked in boring conversations. That's also not helpful. So, let's make the conference more fun for us. Repeat after me. I will treat small talk like a joint quest to find topics we are curious and excited about. I will draw the next person to come up to the right of the stage. How to not be an annoyance to your colleagues. Welcome, everybody, to my little lightning talk, and I promise that this now does not stand for a German acronym, so no need to worry about that. But maybe to get everybody engaged, I'm going to say, when do we need a four-day work week? Now. When? okay so what I'm gonna say yeah so do you have the following problems you need more time for friends and family yeah do you need more time to pursue hobbies and education of course you do are you really burnt out and you're just tired of this job well my friend I have a solution for you and it's the four-day workweek but unfortunately right now as it is this four-day workweek isn't a reality for a lot of us but if you happen to live in Germany like I currently do we have a kind of a solution and this is the Teilzeit und Befristigungsgesetz and so this is the part-time and fixed-term employment act and so what this does is that it says that if you've worked at a company for more than six months and the company has at least 15 employees you have the legal right to request a reduction in your working hours, and your employer has to agree unless they have serious operational reasons not to, and yes, this is a real law, and this is actually, and you have a little checklist to see if you qualify, you've been employed for six months, sorry, this slides were made by AI, so that's why it's repeating itself, but yeah, and I made this like 10 minutes before the talk, so bear with me, and yeah, you haven't made a similar request in the last two years. So that's also important. But what's really cool is that, let's see, right. And so I wanna share with you how you actually do the request itself. So first you have to write it, you have to get it in writing, and then you submit it to the employer. So you can do this via their ticketing system. And then next you have to negotiate with your employer to see which schedule you want. And then, yeah, and the thing is is that actually I did this myself. And what I did is you have to pick, like, a firm day, so, yeah, Monday, Friday, Saturday, or not Saturday, excuse me, but, yeah, maybe Wednesday. And then, yeah, then you have to decide, and then your employer has to give you a respond in writing a month before. And then the other thing is that if you don't get a response from your employer, it actually gets automatically approved. This would be hilarious to see if this has ever actually happened. If it has, please come talk to me. And so, yeah, I'll talk to you a little bit about my story. so I sent a formal request, and then also, too, the other thing is I had an honest conversation with my manager, so we sat down, and I didn't blindside anybody about this. I had a serious conversation, said, hey, I really would like to reduce my working time, and this was actually very interesting, because my manager is in the United States, and in the United States, they don't have this law, and there's actually many countries around the world where they don't have this law, so we're really lucky to have this in Germany, and then what I did is I proposed a schedule. And for me, I'm working Monday through Wednesday and Friday. And funny enough, what I had to do is, because I asked, hey, if I have Fridays off, what happens if there's a holiday on that Friday? Well, they said, oh, well, you still have to work four days that week. And I'm like, okay. So this sounded like an optimization problem. So obviously I wrote a Python script to basically find the optimal day. And this optimal day was Thursday. So it was really cool. Yeah. And then after that, the employer agreed because, hey guess what they have to and yep so now not everyone could do this though and the thing is is that this also meant that I had to take a 20 pay cut luckily in my situation I was able I had the financial resources that I could afford this but not everybody can and I think that this is a being able to work four days a week should be a right for everybody and they should be able to earn 100 income and so I think that going forward we need to normalize this and hey guess what AI is making us more productive, so why aren't we reaping the benefits of this? Yeah, and let's demand this from the lawmakers and all that good stuff. So yeah, four-day work week right now! Okay, cool, thanks everybody. Are you ready for the next round of MATLAB? But now Johan is gonna start his talk Hi Stop the slop a five-minute call for action on the AI assisted workplace AI slop is now officially a term and it's not only an arbitrary term, but it's the word of the year in 2025 Low quality digital content produced usually in large quantity by means of AI It's essentially like the same thing like spam, but it's coming from your own team from your own colleagues Yeah, so There's no filter anymore. You have to deal with it. Like there's no way around this you are confronted with this And it's coming from your colleagues. You will read it in your own put requests. You have it in the tickets You have it in the chat. Nobody is safe anymore. Yeah So what do we do about this first the numbers? How staggering is this 40% of workers? Received a I slop in the past months hands up who has received a I slop in the last month. Oh My goodness, I'm with you. I Myself also who of you guys produce a I slob or sending it around unreflected That's even more people. Awesome. I didn't expect this. 15% of all content received at work is AI stop. I think it's much more. 9 million per year is lost in lost productivity for a 10K person organization. Oh, my goodness. 61% of people hide their IUs from colleagues. I think this is 100%. Let's be honest. 55% pass off AI output as their own work. Two-thirds never check AI output before sending it. I've experienced this. It's worth noting that AI should save time, but now we are drowning in this content. So some case studies, like some concrete examples. There's the curl ragequit. So there is this guy, his name is Daniel Stenberg. He's the maintainer of the curl library. So the curl library is a shell library with which you can download content on the command line and connect to servers and stuff. And apparently they have bounties so that people would fix it and then they got bombarded with AI slop content and AI slob pull requests and then he would be saying we ban every reporter instantly who submits a I slob we are effectively being DDOS eat curls security TXT now reads we will ban you and ridicule you in public if you keep wasting our time and they were drowning in submissions they couldn't keep up with this they were not enough reviewers for all that stuff and then they made a study with more than 1,000 developers? Great question. Let's delve into this. Devs ship faster. Reviewers and the community pay the price. So there was this example, an AI agent hallucinated external services and then mocked them out. A robust, internally consistent hallucination, smiley. They're literally using you to critically evaluate their AI slop. They're using you. imagine this and give it to the next prompt. So you're, as a reviewer, you're basically now one of the lower caste people. You have to provide the others the input. You have to provide the AI the input that they need to keep on working. Isn't that disgusting? As a developer, let's unpack this. Two-prompt rule. Second attempt bad, write it yourself. Game changer. So you should, if it's not working after the second prompt, you should try, you should just disregard it and do it yourself. Second, keep generations small. Can't explain it, reject it. This is key. Be transparent, genuinely underrated. Don't dump AI plans, don't just copy and paste it. Pasting a cloud plan into a ticket with thoughts is honestly asking to do your work. As a team, a holistic overview should be the same as understanding. I cannot stress this enough. Name it. You should say, this looks like a slop to me. So be open, be frank, be direct. Foster a culture of accountability. Rule of thumb, you cannot defend it yourself, so you shouldn't submit it. paradigm shift, establish best practices, you should leverage DSPI, that is meant seriously, look up DSPI. In this timeline, they're gonna soon find out that the economy is also a robust, internally coherent shared hallucination. I'm now in the really hot political debate, I feel. But for today, what I'm going to share is a project that I did during the Easter time. You know, I'm living in Norway. I have two kids at home during holiday time. We didn't go to ski holiday. But so this time we stayed at home and the kids play Roblox all the time. Then as a developer, certainly I want to get their interest into the development. And game development is one area that I'd like them to get more understanding of. Turns out I spend most of time on this instead. So as a disclaimer, I'm a noob when it comes to game development. And also, the knowledge I'm sharing today regarding the AI workflow is all based on my own experience. So you can criticize me after this talk, please. And I'd like to tell the story using the One Piece, how the journey of the AI workflow for myself has been involved over the time. So in order to reach the one piece for AGI in the end, replacing myself, so I need some help. And in order to get help, I take the devil's fruit. In this case, I talk with Chajibiti. So my idea is to be able to make keys-friendly, open-world Genshin Impact-style game and with AAA and TGA award potential. That's a minimum. And also AI agree with me. This is a strong direction. I like it so much Thank you guys, so what's recommended is called dot engine. I haven't heard about it from their website Their marketing is amazing. Look at this design. Look at every animation you can do and every control you can do on it It is it so we chose it and then And as Luffy, the level two, the level one, what I did is to chat on an application, a website, to get answers. If you're coding, that means you have to copy-paste the codes around, like most of us when we start using AI. And the second part, the second phase you usually get into is to be able to let IDE, Cursor, Copilot Chat, or Codex, or things, to be able to manage your code base for the projects. And that I did. and it managed to do that and to create a code base using the GD script and things. But then I found the GoDaddy engine is another runtime. So the AI is not able to know how to rewrite a mistake into the script itself. So in this case, I need to go to the Geo3. I need to be able to break through the wall between the application runtimes so that AI be able to talk to the GoDaddy engine. In that way, able to see what kind of errors the scripts it just made has mistake with. so I can iterate on that. And surprisingly, for top 15, there are top 15 Godot MCP servers. It's really hard for me to choose which one to use. This should be another topic about choosing and creating MCP servers, but not today, so I paid for a commercial one in the end. And now with MCP server, it's able to talk to Godot engine, and since everybody's talking about skills these days, This make you super strong and powerful. And I started using that. By doing that, I'm actually able to create many, many skills, in this case, 16 of those, covering different areas of game development, from simple as keyboard control and complex as a compact system with different stage change and things, not made by me, by AI, just by talking to it. And of course, I validate, hopefully. And in the end, I'm thinking, why should I keep talking to it? Why can't it figure out itself, the AI I'm in? So the AI should just make me the TGA award in the end. I don't want to wait. I don't want to talk to it, help it debugging things, telling it to do the next task and things like that. So then, quite quickly, you start looking at this kind of autonomous agentic protocol, basic, some prompt or agents.md that you define the agent itself. What you usually do, you're going to define the role. There are managers, there are developers, there are testers, and AI needs to have clear understanding of different role difference, the boundaries of responsibilities, and of course what are the task graphs for them to delegate the work together, and how to make decisions, it's like a human team, and very important with code-based roles, the memory management is a key part, and many, many things else. All of this generated by AI again. So it works great. It's actually able to make to-do lists like that. I just tell you are the manager, you make me a TGA game by that open world, keys-friendly game. I'm just, sorry. I'm just sitting there. It's a perfect dream. That's my One Piece. And it's already late in the night. But what I got... No, no, no, no, no. It looks... Wait a second. Oh, sorry. Was it your package or somebody else's? Somebody else's? Oops. I'm so sorry. I also hate myself. So the problem, sometimes you will need to package things with Python that are not Python things. There was a talk about this today. How do you annotate what you're packaging? It's a problem with supply chain, and if you ever want to build it again, how do you know? The answer is documentation. Documentation that tends to drift and fall out of date. So we should have more structured metadata for this so we can build our packages in a safer and better way. Compilers, C or C++ libraries, things that are not Python in general, like node packages that are part of Jupyter lab extensions. I'm so sorry if you're working any of those interfaces. There's a problem. Let's find a solution. have PyProjectOML these days, so why not put it in there? That's exactly what we're trying to do with PEP 725. It's simple in a way. You just need to add one more table to your PyProjectOML. It's not a tool.table, it's a new top-level key, external. Has several categories, but the idea is that depending on how your build dependency or runtime dependency is used, you will know where to put it, or if not, we will teach you. Each string is a sort of a P-U-R-L, if you know this from SBOMs, these P-K-G column addresses. It's a way of expressing package names. Once you have that, we can use it, and that's where the other PEP, PEP 804, comes into place. This handles the part where we take one of those DEP strings and map it to your package manager of convenience. I work in Conda a lot, so I have an example here for how the generic zblib library would look like for CondaForge. And it's simply zblib. We didn't go very far there. We have mappings for many other ecosystems, like Ubuntu or Debian or Windows, Homebrew, all of that. It's an example, the idea is that the community will take on this and maintain the mappings. Each target ecosystem will maintain their mappings. You are seeing QR codes, I didn't talk about them. Basically they are linking to the pep drafts, so if you want to check a deeper look, that's where they are. And we have some examples on what we can build with these peps. The leftmost is the library that handles this table and produces and maps all the dependencies for you. Then there's a demo of a CI build that uses this table to build all the compiled libraries in the top 100 packages of PyPI. And there's also the mappings repository where you can explore how these mappings look like. And I put a little streamed it up as well if you want to see how this dependency is expressed in different ecosystems. Super technical. I hope that no one here needs this ever.
